VFX Lego Portfolio Reviews

So I’ve uh, reviewed a lot of portfolios in my day. And there’re a lot of common high-level themes that I’ve seen crop up over and over. I’ve tried to organize those to make it easier to give way more people portfolio reviews!

The Basics

  • These reviews are available to anyone, with priority being given to members of underrepresented groups.

  • These reviews will cover the following aspects of feedback:

    • 2 VFX fundamentals I'd recommend focusing on improving (for example, mechanical clarity, animation, or texturing)

    • 2 high-level briefs suggesting pieces to do next to improve those fundamentals or your overall portfolio breadth (for example, a explosive fire AoE or a lightning beam sequence).

    • Whether or not your overall presentation was viewer-friendly, and suggestions for improving it if now.

    • I try to include relevant resources or references whenever possible as well.

  • Requests are reviewed weekly, with effort being made to respond within two weeks.

  • Because these reviews rely on a fairly high-level formula in order to offer them to so many people, they’re best-suited to mid-level or lower portfolios. You’re welcome to request one regardless, it just might not be as helpful, sorry.:x

  • If you want more in-depth feedback after receiving one of these reviews, feel free to request a portfolio review chat!:)

VFX Fundamentals (Spoilers)

These are the aspects where I most frequently see early VFX portfolios struggle. Now you can cheat and make your own assumptions or disagree with the review and choose your own path.:)
